Ije by Ike Edeani - LOST V (pre-order)

“On a Wednesday afternoon in June, amid the heaviest part of the rainy season, David is making his way home after picking up his 5 year old son, Chinedu, from school. His wife, Dorcas, is in the hospital, where he’ll be heading later, to be with her and their newborn son. He’d moved his family back home to Enugu just months before, after 15 long years abroad.

Entering a busy junction, a motorcycle crashes into the side of the car at high speed. The rider does not survive.

She had him at 10:30pm the night before. It was her birthday.”

Rooted in a documentary sensibility and an emphasis on narrative, Ike Edeani’s work explores the rhythms and quiet intricacies of life—nuances of gesture and expression, the energy between people and things, atmosphere of place, and the ever shifting qualities of light. Whether working closely and intuitively with subjects or moving intently through environments, the Nigerian artist employs geometry and a deeply observational approach to making pictures, balancing the warmth and intimacy of fleeting moments with a compositional eye shaped by years in architecture and design.
