“These images are the remnant of a possession. They are a departure and arrival of self. I often think about Adoptees, and therefore myself, as two things: first, as rivers, entire bodies carrying ecosystems, bringing bits of the land that we’re traveling away from and shaping the new lands we flow to. And second, as ghosts that haunt both our motherland and the foreign lands we now call home. But here I am, a turned tide, coming back to its source. So I go looking for anything I might find familiar, pieces of the land and waters that make up this island. I feel like I’m being guided by something; I feel myself being pushed and pulled this way and that. Jeju-do has an energy—a presence I can feel running beneath the soil, through my body, and into the air…”

Gia Han (b. 1993, Seoul, South Korea) is an artist living and working. Her work examines self-image, personal histories, family structures, and cultural identity.
