The Fog Has Lifted by Marie Smith

from $30.00

The Fog has lifted consists of self portraits and landscapes that are juxtaposed with and diaristic writing that documents Marie Smith’s experience (from 2019 to 2020) with depression and anxiety.

An excerpt from the monograph: “I collected a bunch of discarded Camilla flowers from my walk, they felt velvety and smooth to touch and I wanted a memento from the day. The pink glow was vivid and, I liked the endless layers of petals which made the flowers look dense. They felt substantial in my hand and I wonder what they will look like this time next year. Once back inside I felt tired, doing small things like going outside is now exhausting. The day ended with a nice dinner, wine and a Zoom chat with friends in London and Berlin.”

Marie Smith’s practice incorporates text and digital and analogue photography as a form of visual language. Marie’s experience with anxiety/depression has informed how she addresses identity, nature, environmentalism, mental health and wellbeing in her practice.

Marie Smith is a visual artist and writer born, living and working in London. Smith graduated in 2017 with a MA in History in Art with Photography at Birkbeck, University of London.
